Care Steps We Take During an AC Tune-Up

Have you ever wondered exactly what our team does during an AC tune-up in Broomfield? We’re outlining the steps we take to care for your air conditioner so that you know what to expect during the service appointment and what you’re paying for.

Keep reading to learn the what and why behind AC maintenance steps so you know what to expect during your next service appointment. Maintenance is an investment that will pay off for years to come and help your AC to work at its absolute best year after year.

Assessing Start-Up and General Operation

First, we want to get an idea of how your AC operates as a whole. This means listening and paying attention to how your AC works during a cooling cycle – including how easily it initially turns on. We will take note of any overarching issues with start-up, such as unusual noises or difficulty starting a cycle. Examples include humming, clicking, or turning off soon after starting up.

We also want to ensure that the safety features are working the way they should to prevent major issues and safety hazards. One example is the shutoff box that prevents your air conditioner from accepting too much power if there is a power surge or the system begins to overheat.

Another example is the overflow safety switch that helps identify backups in the condensate drain line that allow water to spill out of the line and into the overflow pan. Water and electricity do not mix, and the overflow safety switch turns your AC off as a precaution. If we suspect that this safety switch is engaging, we will clean out your condensate drain lines to prevent future issues.

Inspecting the Refrigerant Lines

Your AC refrigerant lines have a very important job. They absorb heat to transfer it outside your home and cool down air to blow out the vents. These lines extend all the way from the outdoor condenser unit to the indoor portion where the evaporator coil is located.

We will also ensure both sets of coils are clean so that your AC can efficiently absorb heat from inside and release it outside without any hiccups. If these lines sustain damage, then refrigerant can easily leak out and reduce cooling capabilities. Aside from impacting operation, refrigerant is also dangerous outside of the secure lines. We’ll identify and repair any leaks and then recharge your refrigerant levels.

Maximizing Airflow

When it comes to airflow, there are always tweaks we can make to improve operation. We will assess components contributing to airflow optimization including:

  • Checking the air filter for quality and to see how dirty it is
  • Identifying and fixing any fan blades that are bent or warped
  • Cleaning out in between intricate gears and bearings and then relubricating them
  • Testing the motor to make sure it is secure and that all the connections are tight
  • Inspecting the attached ductwork holes or broken seals to see if you also need duct services

Additional Items

Aside from these big-ticket inspection areas, we also want to get into the details. Additional AC maintenance steps include:

  • Checking battery charge and calibration on your thermostat
  • Assessing the sturdiness of the foundation where your indoor and outdoor units sit
  • Measuring amperage to test for anomalies
  • Testing the reversing valve if we’re at your home for heat pump service
